Getting Pregnant After C-Section & Breastfeeding: What to Expect

Question
I am 23 years old, my second child was delivered by c-section just 2 months ago.  I stopped breast feeding 2 weeks ago.  I am wondering if you can get pregnant in the interim - after breast feeding, but before my first period?

Answer
You can become pregnant if you have ovulated and have unprotected sex around the time of ovulation. Usually, ovulation occurs 14 days after the first day of your first period. However, sometimes, ovulation can occur earlier. Even if you have not stopped nursing, you can become pregnant. If you do become pregnant right after having the cesarean, ACOG recommends that you have a repeat cesarean if you come to term within 18 months of the previous cesarean. If you come to term later than 18 months, you may be able to attempt a VBAC if there are no other indications for a repeat cesarean.
