PCOS & Fertility: Navigating Conception with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Question
I am 37 years old. I don't have any children.  I was diagnosised with pcos 19 years ago. At the time I had irregular periods.  For the last 8 years I have had a regular cycle which comes every 30 days like clock work.  My husband and I are trying to conceive (we've been trying for two months now) and I was told by my Doctor when I was 18 years old that the only way I could get pregnant was with the use of fertility drugs.

I was also told that the only way I would have a regular cycle was if I took bc, but that's not true.  I haven't used bc since 1996. The first day of my last cycle was 11/3/05 and it lasts 5 day.  My question is even though I have a regular cycle and have pcos is the use of fertility drugs my only chance to concieve?

Answer
If you are ovulating, you should be able to conceive. If you have regular cycles, you probably are, indeed, ovulating. If your cycle is 30 days in length (from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period) ovulation occurs on cycle day #16, each month. You can conceive if you have sex on cycle day #15,16,17, or 18. If you have PCOS, often Clomid (clomiphene citrate) and metformin increases the probability of ovulaton and subsequent conception. The side effects are minimal and this combination of medications appears to work very, very well. Discuss it with your doctor.
