Progesterone & Early Pregnancy: Understanding Negative HPT After Miscarriage

Question
I miscarried (and had a D&C) in April at almost 11 weeks.  At the beginning of June, I took progesterone for three days to kick-start my cycle, and my period started June 9.  I still haven't had another, but I took a home pregnancy test after 8 weeks, and it was negative.  The first time I was pregnant, there was a 5 week difference between how far I should have been based on LMP and what was visible on the ultrasound.(I thought I was 11w6d and US showed 5w6d)  I had a negative test at 7 weeks and positive at 9.

I know it would help if I knew my average cycle length, but the only thing that I remember from before I went on the pill was that they weren't predictable.  Basically, I'm nervous that everything seems the same as the last pregnancy that ended badly (if indeed I am pregnant)... and wondering whether the progesterone would have any effect on the length of the following cycle.  Do you have any ideas?

Thanks for your time,
Anne

Answer
Dear Anne,

No, the progesterone is used mainly to simply get a cycle started. If you have irregular cycles, which it sounds like you do, the progesterone dose won't really do anything to regulate that or to make you have a certain cycle length.

It does make it very difficult when your cycles are irregular. The difference in gestational age before probably had everything to do with that. The good news is that - even though you weren't having a regular period, you must have been ovulating. So - keep trying!  :-)  You never know when you might be ovulating so I would advise not letting more than 3-4 days go by without a sexual encounter if you are actively trying to conceive.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
