H1N1 Vaccine: Safety & Risks for Pregnant Women - Expert Insights

Question
Hello,

I'm surprised, but I saw no questions about h1n1 vaccinations. I am worried to get one, and I'm worried not to get one. I work in a daycare setting, and I go to college, and I'm 20 weeks pregnant. According to time and cnn, pregnant women are much more likely both to get h1n1, and to be hospitalized/die from it. Knowing that, it would seem best to get the vaccine. HOWEVER, I've gotten sick from flu vaccines before, so I'm afraid that if I get the vaccine my body will latch on to it and then I'll definitely have the disease. I guess the question is, is the Vaccine REALLY going to be safe, and is it worth getting?

Answer
Hi Jessica,

This is a hard one, with lack of knowledge of the effects on pregnant women it is hard to say. If you have no existing health concerns then I would say no, just wash your hands and be extra careful. However if there are existing health concerns then you are at more risk and therefore should get the vaccine. It is really your decision.
