AnswerIf the sonogram showed no evidence of a pregnancy, but rather a small ovarian cyst (golf ball size), I doubt that the home pregnancy test was accurate, especially since you had a hysterectomy 8 years ago. (A total hysterectomy is the removal of only the uterus. A partial hysterectomy is removal of only a portion of the uterus such as a supracervical hysterectomy where the cervix is left in place. A total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingoophorectomy is the removal of the uterus and the tubes and the ovaries. If they left the ovaries in place, it is still called a total hysterectomy. If they removed the entire uterus (fundus and cervix) it is impossible to become pregnant because the sperm cannot find the egg and fertilize it. However, if there was still a conduit of some sort that allowed the sperm to travel to the egg, conceivable you can have an abdominal pregnancy (not intrauterine). If you are pregnant in your abdomen, you will need surgery or you will die. It is not an abortion because an abdominal pregnancy is life threatening and cannot survive. If you have any doubts, take two blood tests for pregnancy (HCG) 48 hours apart. If there is a doubling of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a pregnancy. If both results are less than 5, you are not pregnant. Go to your doctor and discuss everything with him (symptoms, fears, etc).
