Brown Bloody Discharge in Early Pregnancy: Causes & What to Do
QuestionI am 31 years of age, I have one child who just turned two last week and the date of my last cycle was Sept 14th. I had bleeding that started at 7 wks and then stopped with a short weekend of bed rest. I had an ultrasound and everything was okay and just had an ultrasound at 9wks5days and everything was ok. The othernight I had an orgasm and then the next day I noticed a lil' bit of this brown bloody discharge, and have had a slight increase of it this morning. It is very moderate, but I wanted to know if I should be concerned about this. Or is this normal?
Thanks,
Dana
AnswerWe often see some bleeding following intercourse during pregnancy. It is usually insignificant and stops within a few hours. At 10.5 weeks, you may have a "subchorionic hematoma" which is a sequestration of blood within the folds of the developing placenta. This causes bleeding but does not effect the pregnancy or the fetus. A brownish discharge may merely be some "old blood" that is being pushed out of the uterus by the growing fetus.
