Induction at 37 Weeks: Weighing the Pros and Cons
QuestionI'm 37 weeks with my first and dilated 2 cm and 30% effaced as of my last appointment. I've been having contractions on and off and a constant back pain that keeps getting stronger, along with added painful pressure in my vaginal area. Could I ask to be induced now at 37 weeks?
AnswerWe usually do not like to induce any primip without an indication. When you reach your due date, you will probably start to have regular contractions. When you have contractions at the level of your belly button that occur every 3 minutes (from the start of one to the start of the next) and each lasts for at least 45 seconds, and all of this continues for a full hour, you should be checked. When you are 3-4cm and fully effaced, you will be admitted to the hospital. At 37 weeks gestation, it is very common only to be 2cm and minimally effaced. The back ache can be relieved with tylenol or a heating pad. Drink plenty of fluids and that may help the irregular contractions. Good Luck. You have given no indication for being induced.
