Understanding Spotting in Pregnancy: A Personal Experience

Question
This is my third pregnancy of back to back pregnancies. My first pregnancy I tested positive for preterm labor and had to be seen every 2 weeks until induced two days before edd due to swelling and elevated bp despite bedrest.
This pregnancy at 28 weeks I experienced 2 hours straight of 5 minute apart contractions which I chose not to visit L&D since I have two babies at home to take care of. At my appointment, my doctor only checked for the heartbeat. Now two weeks later I had spotting and 8 hours later I once again had heavy contractions for two hours five minutes apart that I had to concentrate through.
I received no medical attention for this pregnancy prior to 22 weeks. Does this mean I am further along in my pregnancy or should I be concerned of pre term labor?

Answer
Dear Sadie

Actually you should be concerned twice. First because of the possibility of a recurrent preterm labor and second because of possible placenta previa. Spotting at 28 weeks may indicate abnormal position of the placenta. This may need an ultrasound scan for proper and accurate diagnosis. There are certain precautions to take if you have a previa. This condition is a serious one and medical examination is mandatory. You need to call and set an appointment with your Ob.

Good Luck
