Subchorionic Hemorrhage in Early Pregnancy: What You Need to Know

Question
I am 30 and am 8 weeks pregnant. I started bleeding (brown discharge last Tuesday), Wednesday was bright red and I went to the doctor. The advised me of a dime sized subchorianic hemorrhage on Wednesday last week. My cervix was closed, babies heartbeat was around 120 and the baby appeared okay. I am still having the brownish discharge, but nothing red. Is the size of the hemorrhage normal? Should I be real concerned of a miscarriage? How long should the discharge last? I appreciate your help.

Answer
A subch0orionic hematoma is a sequestration of a small amount of blood within the folds of the developing placenta. It usually dissipates on its own and causes no harm to the pregnancy or to the fetus. Since your fetus has a good heartbeat and your cervix is closed and you don't have any cramps, don't worry about it. It can bleed for a few weeks but usually stops on its own without further problems.
