Gestational Diabetes Test: Understanding the One-Hour Glucose Test & Food Intake

Question
I am having my blood drawn for Gestational Diabetes next week (the one hour test). My appt is at 9am, and my OB has instructed me NOT to fast, and to eat breakfast as normal, and then drink the sugary substance one hour prior to my appointment. My question is this - won't my normal breakfast (which consists of fruit, yogurt, and toast with peanut butter and jam) elevate the sugar in my body? I would hate to get a false positive on this test and have to do the 3 hour. Would perhaps eating something with more protein for breakfast work better? I would hate to fast all together and skew the results, especially since my OB has requested my diet stay the same before my test.

Answer
The 1-hour post glucose screen is merely a screening test and we do not want you to fast or alter your diet at all prior to the test. If  the test shows a result of less than 140, all is fine. If the result is greater than  140, you will be sent for a three-hour glucose tolerance test . For a 3hGGT you will have to fast for 12 hours prior to the test and your blood will be drawn every hour for three hours.  Don't worry. Just follow the instructions of your doctor.
