QuestionHaving an amnio at 36 weeks to see if the lungs are mature to deliver early since I have gestational diabetes. When would I find out the results? Will they tell me right after the amnio?
AnswerDear Diana,
The amnio tests for chemicals present in the amniotic fluid, called an L/S ratio, to see if it is high enough to indicate a good chance of the baby breathing without problems. The sample will likely be sent to the laboratory, especially since you have gestational diabetes.
Sometimes babies of moms with gestational diabetes may have false mature readings, so they want a bit higher L/S ratio than normal. Usually a 2:1 ratio will indicate lung maturity, but due to how the diabetes affects the infant in utero, babies adapt accordingly. So sometimes, depending on the severity of the gestational diabetes, we take this into consideration and like to see a 2.5:1 or 3:1 ratio for these babies. Depending upon the workload of your facility, you should know the results within 24 hours.
I hope this information has helped you and answered your questions. I wish you well and good results!!
