Enlarged Yolk Sac in Early Pregnancy: What Does It Mean?

Question
I read a response you gave to a woman who had an enlarged yolk
sac at 7 weeks pregnant.  I have just been told the same
information and everything I've read - except your comment -
seems very negative that this could end in a healthy pregnancy.  Is
it really true that an enlarged yold sac could mean nothing at all?  I
am 43 with a  healthy 19 month old.  The date of my last menstrual
period is 12/4/05.  I am 7 weeks pregnant currently.  All other
signs - fetal size, heartbeat, etc. look great.  Thank you so much
for any information you can give.  You are my first glimmer of
hope.  No pressure, though!

Answer
If the fetus is adequately growing and there is a good fetal heartbeat, and you have no bleeding or cramping, there is usually nothing to worry about.  The size of the yolk sac does not necessarily indicate an impending miscarriage. If you are concerned, repeat the sonogram at 12 weeks and see if there has been adequate growth.
