Understanding Gestational Age and HCG Levels in Early Pregnancy

Question
Hello!

I recently underwent fertility treatments, and am 5 weeks, 3 days along.  I had my first ultrasound at 5 weeks exactly, and nothing was really seen. My doctor commented that it was probably too early to see anything and to come back in a week.

My concern is that my HCG was at a level where I think a sac should have been visible.  My levels have been doubling every 48 hours as expected, and on the day I had the ultrasound, it was at 2360.  My progesterone is at 33.  I checked the ultrasounds from my last pregnancy, and at 5 weeks, 1 day, a sac was clearly visible.

Although I'm getting another ultrasound in a week, I'm worried to death about an ectopic and the fact that I should have seen a sac at that HCG level.  Should I be worried or is this relatively normal for only being 5 weeks even with an HCG of >2000?

Thank you!

Sheri

Answer
Dear Sheri

Please calm down. Gestational sac measurments are not an accurate measurement for dating pregnancy and there is wide variations in the normal range. Furthermore, if you had an abdominal ultrasound or an inexperiences sonographer, it is easy to miss the diagnosis.

There is no reason to worry at this stage based on the findings u mentioned.
