Possible Pregnancy: Early Symptoms & Concerns - Medical Advice

Question
I'm 26 years old, and have 3 boys.  My last period was January 14th.  My husband came home from deployment on January 12th.  The spermicidal condom broke and I think I might be pregnant.  My period started on the 14th of Jan and only lasted a little over 3 days which is unusual for me because mine usually goes for 7 days.  I just started to have a little queasiness and some slight cramping.  I'm also having heavy vaginal discharge that makes me wonder if it's just a wierd timed ovulation?  I took a home pregnancy test which came out negative but that could be because its way too early to tell.  With all my other pregnancies I had no symptoms at all until I missed a period.  I'm kind of anxious and stressed about it so I'd like to know if you think I could be pregnant?  Thanks a lot.

Answer
If your last period started on January 14, you could not become pregnant prior to that date. You would have ovulated on January 27 and could only become pregnant if you have sex on January 13,14,15, or 16.  A period is considered normal if it is less then 14 days. A 3 day period is as normal as a 7 day period, even if you usually bleed longer.
The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after you miss your next period. You are due for your next period on February 10. If you do not get your period by February 17, take a pregnancy test and you will know for sure. The earliest symptoms of pregnancy are breast tenderness, nausea, and fatigue.
