Early Pregnancy Symptoms Diminishing? What Could It Mean?

Question
Hello.  I am 23 years of age, have no children and the first day of my last menstrual period was on July 8, 2004.  This is also my first pregnancy.

My concern is that since I found out about my pregnancy I had been experiencing all of the "text book" pregnancy symptoms.  Now all of a sudden I don't feel nauseous and my breast are no longer tender and they seem to be diminishing in size.  I've had no spotting or bleeding but can't shake the thought that I should still be feeling some sort of symptoms and that something could possibly be wrong.  When I went to my first OB appt at about 5 weeks the Dr. said that baby had a heartbeat and that everything looked o.k..  Should I take comfort in this and just wait until my next OB appt in about 3 1/2 weeks? Or do I have reason to be concerned and should call my practioner about this?

Please let me know what your opinion is.  Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Jennifer

Answer
If your last period started on July 8, you are now around 7 weeks pregnant. You do not have to feel symptoms of pregnancy (breast tenderness, nausea, fatigue) in order to have a viable pregnancy. Unless your doctor performed a sonogram, it is impossible to hear a fetal heartbeat at 5 weeks gestation (which would have been on August 12). If you have any doubt, take a sonogram when you are 8 weeks from your last period and you should see a fetus, and a fetal heartbeat. As long as you are not having any vaginal bleeding, everything is, most likely, O.K. Good luck.
