Understanding Early Fetal Heart Rate: What to Expect

Question
Dr, thank you so much for so kindly answering our questions.

I started spotting at about 5.5 weeks.  HCG was 610 and progesterone only 8.  A few days later the HCG was over 6,000 and progesterone was 16.5.  On Monday, at what I believe was about 6 weeks (based on my LMP and usual cycle length of 32 days), I had an ultrasound that showed, as the doctor put it, "the beginnings of a heartbeat."  My spotting subsided that day.  Yesterday I had more spotting and had another ultrasound.  The tech measured me at 6 weeks 2 days.  I believe that is probably 1 or even 2 days behind (I had a very early positive HPT, so I'm pretty sure my dates are correct).  She did two heartrate measurements and got 115 BPM and 117 BPM.

I'm worried that the embryo is measuring behind, and also at the slow heartrate.  Shouldn't by 6.5 weeks the HR be above 120?  Thanks!

Answer
A sonogram at 6-10 weeks is very inccurate. The best time to take a sonogram (and you probably will have another one) is at 20 weeks gestational age (from the first day of your last period). After 9-10 weeks, the fetal heartbeat will be 120-160BBM. At this time, it does not matter for the health of the fetus. Don't worry. It sounds like all is well.
