Birth Control & Potential Pregnancy After Starting Ortho Tri-Cyclen

Question
I am 24 years old with no children and the date of the first day of my last menstrual period was March 3, 2006. I started Ortho TriCyclen Lo on March 5, 2006 and have been taking it daily.  I had intercourse with my boyfriend on March 10, 2006 after taking pill #6.  I am usually on a 31 day cycle.  Should I be concerned about becoming pregnant?

Answer
Usually, we recommend that you do not have unprotected sex for 14 days after starting the pill, so that you are sure that the pill prevented ovulation. If your last period started on March 3, if you were not taking the pill, you would have ovulated on March 16 and could have conceived if you had sex on March 15,16,17, or 18. You would not have ovulated as early as March 10, so you need not worry. You cannot conceive until you ovulate. Most likely, you started the pills early enough to have prevented ovulation.
