Subchorionic Hemorrhage: Symptoms, Causes & What to Expect

Question
I am 33 with two children aged 2 1/2 and 12 months. Both my previous pregnancies were trouble free. I have had three very heavy bleeds during this pregnancy, all of which have saturated my clothes and anything I have had the misfortune to be sitting on at the time. They come with no warning and after the initial gush which continues for a few hours, I spot for the next week or so. The first bleed at 10 weeks was bright red. Both the second and third at 13 and 14 1/2 weeks were brown. The doctor has told me to expect this to happen again. I have now reached 15 1/2 weeks. My baby is growing and has a strong heart beat. Could you advise how long this situation is likely to continue? Am I likely to reach full term? Is there anything I could do to minimise the risk of miscarriage?

Answer
This pregnancy is also trouble free so far. A subchorionic bleed is merely a sequestration of blood within the folds of the developing placenta. It is not near the baby and will not affect the baby, especially if you are over 14 weeks. The bleeding will usually dissipate on its own by 20 weeks. As long as the baby is growing adequately and the FH is good, pleasee don't worry.
