Understanding Breech Birth: What You Need to Know

Question
I am 34 yrs old and this is my first pregnancy.  I am 21 weeks pregnant and the doctor told me my baby is in the breeched position.  All she said is that there may be complications.  What does breeched birth mean?  I am confused because the doctor did not give me too much information.  Should I stop exercising?  What can I do to get the baby in the right position?
Thanks,

Answer
A fetus moves a lot during pregnahcy. It is floating in the amniotic fluid and sometimes it can be head down and sometimes if can be "bottom down". When the head is down, it is called "vertex presentation." When the butt is down, it is called "breech presentation". Most of the time, when you reach term  the baby positions itself in the vertex position to make it easier to deliver vaginall.y. If it remains in the breech position, you will need a cesarean section for many reasons. At 21 weeks, you need not worry. All I would do at this time is repeat the sonogram when you are 30 weeks. If the baby has turned by then, you have nothing to worry about. If it is still a breech at 30 weeks, repeat the sonogram at 36 weeks. If it still is breech, you will schedule a cesarean section. You do not have to do any exercises at this time.
