Pregnancy Symptoms & Unusual Pain: Understanding Possible Causes

Question
The other day my sister went to the hospital to the ER and she had stomach pains, she hadn't gotten her menstrual in about 2 months and she finds out she is pregnant. At the time of the visit she did a urine test, had blood work done and she said she was checked vaginally with a device, but don't know what device was used. But the doctor's came to this conclusion, they told her that where the fetus is supposed to be position, I think in the ovaries, but that's not the case, they told her that the fetus is located in one of the tubes that connects to the ovarie, would this be called "tubular pregnancy"?
If so what is it?
What is the cause?
What needs to be done?
How serious is it and what needs to be done to fix it?
They told her about a surgery procedure, what is the process and what is done at that time and why?
Please answer this for me and so I could pass it on to my sister, I am very concerned. Thank you so much...

Answer
Chelynn,
If the fetus is in the fallopian tubes, it is referred to as an ectopic pregnancy.  It sounds like that is what your sister has.  It is a serious condition that needs surgical attention. They will go in laprascopically (usually on 3 small incisions) with a camera and remove the fetus.  Hopefully they can salvage her fallopian tube.  There is no way for a baby to survive outside the uterus.  No one knows why it happens for sure. If she doesn't take care of the problem, she could hemorrhage.  I hope this helps.
