Ectopic Pregnancy & Salpingectomy: Understanding Recovery & Future Fertility

Question
My 29 yr old daughter recently had an eptopic pregnancy at  6 1/2 weeks ...She had to have a rt. salpingectomy. She had  a hbg of 65 post surgery .the doctor told her she was a lucky lady. He called it a corium ( that may not be right) .He had only see 4 of this type of eptopic in his 25 + yrs of practice. He said she was close to having a hyst , but lucky he was able to save her uterus.. They are told that conceiving is still possible as she has on good tube and both her ovaries. My question is when is it safe for her to try to conceive . What is too soon ?? M concern is for her. I have read that there is a chance of another eptopic if she gets pregnant too soon. Is this true...thanks

Answer
Dear Karen

I would agree with you that there is a chance of having another ectopic only if the damaged tube was kept. Having the tube removed does not have any future consequences regarding the rate of ectopic pregnancy. The possibility of having another ectopic in your daughter's case is similar to that in the general population.

The answer to the question of when she can get pregnant depends on the type of surgery she had. Generally speaking, she can attempt pregnancy after 6 months of laparoscopic surgery but for laparotomy a longer period of 1 year may be justified. This duration is not for any reason other than to regain her vitality and strength, replenish her iron stores, the blood lost during surgery in preparation for the future pregnancy.

Good Luck
