Early Pregnancy Concerns: Spotting & Lack of Morning Sickness - Seeking Reassurance

Question
I am 23 years old. I have no children. My LMP was September 17, 2004. I am roughly about 5-6 weeks pregnant. I had a miscarriage in May of this year, so needless to say I am very nervous about this pregnancy. I hope you could help to ease my mind alittle. I have a few questions for you. First, I have not experienced any sort of spotting, I am wondering if this is okay or not. Should I be worried? Second, I am also not experiencing any kind of morning sickness at all. Is this okay? Is something wrong with having a lack of morning sickness? Lastly, what would be the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy? I read all these books that tell you signs, and I guess half of it's in my mind but I am wondering what the signs would be. How soon can they tell if it is an ectopic pregnancy? How is it determined? I would like to thank you for your time and I appreciate and respect your answers. Thanks again.

Answer
There is no reason for you to have any bleeding or spotting  in early pregnancy, although a bit of spotting is normal. Some women have morning sickness and some do not. The women who do not have nausea and vomiting during pregnancy are very happy. The symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy (tubal pregnancy) are spotting and excruciating pain on one side of the abdomen or the other. If you do have such a pain, call your doctor and get a sonogram to see if there is a pregnancy in your uterus or in the tube. If your last period started on September, you are now 5 weeks 3 days from your last period. A sonogram will not show a fetus until 6 weeks gestation. If you are not having pain, don't worry. If you are, I would wait another week. Then you should see a fetus and a fetal heartbeat.
