Monoamniotic Pregnancy: Understanding Diagnosis & Chances of Misdiagnosis

Question
Hello, My 28yr.old daughter had an ultrasound at our hospital and she was diagnosed with having a monoamniotic pregnancy. At the time of the ultrasound she was 6w-5d. What are the chances that she was misdiagnosed? Could the next ultrasound show a membrane,or the two amniotic sacs if she is further along???? Two of the websites we have looked into claim that under 12 weeks it's too early to be confirmed. We are pretty concerned, she had a miscarriage last year, and this pregnancy sounds like it comes with  alot of stress. She was told to return in 4 weeks for another one. Thank you. Debbie

Answer
Debbie,
I agree, it seems rather early to diagnose that. She is going to have to play the waiting game. She is not necessarily at as much risk for miscarriage as she is for a cord accident. She would be very high risk and will be hospitalized for a month or two before she gives birth. We monitor the babies heart beats continuously. Because there is no membranes separating babies, they tend to get tangled in their cords. Hopefully her next ultrasound will say everything is fine. If she had her ultrasound done by her OB doctor, I would tell her don't worry too much. If she already had her ultrasound done by a high risk pernatologist, then I guess I would be a little more concerned. A lot of times things are missed when done by people other than a high risk doctor. If she doesn't already go to one, she needs to find a doctor that delivers at a level 3 hospital. You don't want her going to a level 2 hospital or doctor where they aren't capable of this high risk pregnancy if she really does have monoamniotic twins. Good luck!
