HELLP Syndrome After a Previous Pregnancy: Risk & Management

Question
Hello Doctor!  I had pre eclampsia and the HEELP Syndrome with my last pregnancy and had to deliver at 25 weeks.  I am in my 22nd week with our last baby and wanted to know the chances of having the same problems with this pregnancy.

Answer
As long as you are watching your blood pressure and call your doctor at  any vague symtoms, you will probably be all right. It is possible to, again, develop preeclampsia but it is uncommon after the first pregnancy. I would take blood testw for liver function studies, hemolysis, platelet count, and proteinurea just to have a baseline. There is always a chance of  preeclampsia with subseqent HEELP syndrome.
