Sciatic Pain & Loose Bowels in Late Pregnancy: What to Know

Question
Hi. Im 38/3 weeks pregnant and I have extreme pains that shoot down my legs and inner thighs, when it happens I honestly fall to the ground what could this be? Also I have been having loose bowels for aabout a week or so now.  I was checked for dialation on Thursday and wasn't dialated at all so I would like to know if this could be a sign of labor starting? This is my second child im trying for a vbac.

Answer
This could be the result of the sciatic nerve being compressed. This would send pain, initiating in the lower back, shooting down one or both legs, that can cause instability. This could also be something far more serious if this is the result of an injury and is causing incontinence. You should not hesitate to have this checked out by your physician in either case. It is not uncommon in the third trimester to.experience sciatica due to the change in the way your body carries your weight. This causes more strain on your back and compresses more nerves in your back than normal. This is most likely the case, however the case, your physician will be able to properly treat you to make you feel more comfortable. Avoiding falls is very important right now because it can cause significant injury to yourself and/or your unborn child. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know. God bless.
