Early Pregnancy Concerns: Missing Yolk Sac & Fetal Heartbeat - Seeking Information

Question
I went to the Dr. last friday October 6, 2006 and they stated that i was 5 weeks and 5-6 days, i went back today october 12,2006 and was given some really bad news, they could not find a yolk sac or a fetal heartbeat.  is there anyway they could be wrong or dates inaccurate.  I have not had any cramping bleeding fever, nothing to suggest a misscarrige.  is it possible that I'm still pregnant and the yolk sac is just not visable.  They have sceduled me to have another U/S on monday but he diagnosis doesn't look good, they have also scheduled a D&C for wed if I have not had a cycle by said time.  Is waiting a few weeks realistic?

Answer
Hi Natashia :)

I am sorry to hear this news. There is a possible chance that the diagnoses is incorrect. However, that chance is slim, considering you are 5 weeks into your pregnancy.

At 5 weeks, a heartbeat is easily seen, and heard, as well as visuals of the fetus at this stage is also easily seen as well.

If you had told me that you were only perhaps 1-2 weeks into your pregnancy, I would have suggested a full investigation, including another sonogram.

However, it sounds to me your doctor, is doing the right thing here, and is giving you another sonogram, just to confirm his suspisions, before surgically terminating this pregnancy.

If there is room for error here, it will most definately be determined on Monday, when you have the second ultrasound.

If you have the same diagnoses on Monday's ultrasound, then I really do think the results are conclusive.

Sounds like you have a good doctor. All to often, I have heard of this diagnoses, after one ultrasound, and often its not followed up.

Your doctor is confirming his suspicions, before taking the next step, and you cant ask for better then that.

Please write back, and let me know the outcome of your ultrasound. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Hope this is of some help, and thanks for writing.
