Early Pregnancy Concerns: Missing Fetal Pole & HCG Levels - What Could It Mean?

Question
I am supposed to be 11 weeks pregnant, however last week we had a us done and no fetal pole. gestational sac was 18mm and yolk sac was visible but no baby or hb.my hcg levels were drawn on monday and they were 1200(low i think)but doc said everyhing might be o.k- just not as far along as we thought originally. however when redrawn on wendsday they had dropped to 9000. doc said " they did not rise like we had hoped" but has never said the word misscairage or dnc only that we will do another us on monday and go from there. she has asked me if i have bleeding, and i don. my waist is still getting thicker although i have lost 3 pounds in last week and my back hurts.i am so confused right now all i do is cry.why does she seem to still have hope?

Answer
Hi Jess.
It's no wonder you're confused, they haven't given you a lot to go by!
I'm not a medical professional, but dropping hCG levels is normally not a promising sign & usually indicates a failing pregnancy.
I suspect they will confirm everything at your next ultrasound. They do this as a precaution to ensure misdiagnosis, but the hormone levels are usually a good indicator of what's going on.
The scan will look at any growth & confirm whether the pregnancy will go full term. If it doesn't then they'll look at any deterioration & whether your body will miscarry normally or you need a D&C.

I hope this has clarified things a little more for you. Please feel free to come back if you have any further questions.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
