I am 29years old and am supposed to be 11-12 weeks pregnant, second child. For 6 days I have been bleeding/spotting. It is not heavy but more like gore/grum. I had skan 2 days ago and the doctor couldn't see the baby on internal scan. Then she performed internal and saw the fetus 3,6 sm. She said it should be at least 5sm. But when I checked the fetus develpoment on the Net now it is written that the length of 10 weeks old fetus is 3,5! And she says it is like 5 weeks pregnancy /because of the length. My last period was on 6/04/05 /I think but am not quite sure/. She could not detect any heart beating but said in 2 weeks I must go again or to ask for a second opinion. Someone told me that a lady delivered a healthy baby despite the doctors could not detect a heart beating and the length of the fetus. But-no bleeding... I thought I am miscarrying the baby but now...I have hope. I have no pain. Does anyone have such experience? Could the doctor be wrong? Why couldn't she see the baby on external but only on internal scan? So many questions...

Try to remember when the first day of your last period was. If you believe that you are 11-12 weeks pregnant, your last period must have started on April 14 (not June 14). However, a sonogram taken prior to 6 weeks gestation will show only an empty gestational sac but no fetus or fetal heartbeat. After 6 weeks, we ALWAYS should see a fetus and a fetal heartbeat.  I would repeat the sonogram in two weeks and see if anything more is seen. If there still is no fetus or hearteat, it does not look good.

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply.

My last period was on 6th April 2005 or a week later /it was one of those Wednesdays/. My periods last usually longer /arround 32 days/. And-is the sonogram a scan? I am living in the UK...What should be length of the baby at 11 weeks? I just thought that there could be something wrong with the scan... You know.

Answer
A sonogram is a "scan" or an "ultrasound". If your last period started on April 6, and you have a 32 day cycle (from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period) ovulation occurs on cycle day #18. Therefore, you may have ovulated on Arpil 23. You should now be 11-12 weeks pregnant and a sonogram should, by now, see a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. If it doesn't, it may be due to poor technique of the sonographer or there may be a problem. I still would repeat the scan in two weeks and see if there is any change. If, in two weeks, there still is no fetus, the diagnosis is miscarriage.
