Pregnancy Due Date Changes: Understanding Ultrasound & Dating Methods

Question
Hey, I'm 21 years old and I'm pregnant with my first child. I told my doctor the first day of my last period was May 18th, so they said my due date would be around Feb 18th. But I had to have 2 ultrasounds because they weren't sure, and now they are saying March 3rd... How can they change it if I know my dates? (I always used to track my periods on my calendar just so I knew, because I wasn't on the pill)

Just wondering how far I could be then! Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Danielle :)

Changing dates according to babies measusrements sometimes happens. I have no doubt at all that your dates are accuarate, and I am sure the doctors have no doubt at all either.

But your baby might be measuring a little smaller, or bigger in the womb, for the dates that you expressed. It doesnt mean you are wrong, just means your baby's size is a little ahead, or a little behind. And that doesnt mean there is anything wrong. We all have babies that are different sizes, and weights, but guides have to be followed.

So this is all that is happening, and its quite common, so dont have any worries. Your dates have only been bumped by 10-14 days, so you have absolutely nothing at all to be concerned about.

Remember, your dates are estimated, but you are considered full term at the 37 week mark. At that point, you can have the baby at any given time.

Without a doubt, according to your last period, you would be due around Feb 18th. Your baby's size however, states differently. Doesnt make your wrong, just they have to make the adjustment according to your baby's size.

Now oddly, I did my own calcualtions. The due date I got for you is roughly February 22nd.  Also, November 23'rd, I have you pegged at being 27 weeks. So my calculations state right on, with your first date. Just off by 3 days.

This just even more ...proves the changes made, were just due to your baby's size:)

Hope this answers your question, and thanks for writing!
