Pregnancy Symptoms: Are These Signs of Pregnancy?

Question
I am having a lot of pregnancy symptoms. The most evident is the extremely sore breasts. I have never experienced such pain in my life. My nipples are sore and darker. I have stomach cramps and a gut feeling that i am pregnant. I have irregular periods and i should have had a period by now. I noticed a unique smell, and light discharge, clear mostly. It looks like mucus maybe, light sticky feeling. I have lower stomach discomfort especially if i am trying to sleep in different positions. Things don't taste the same and i am so tired. I took a qualitive blood test and it came up negative. How could this be when i am almost positive i am pregnant. If i am not pregnant there is definitely something wrong, i am not imagining these symptoms but i cannot ignore them either. I want to ask for a sonogram to check my ovaries and my cervix. I have had cervical problems, like a leep procedure and i am very worried. Something is going on with my body and i can't explain what. It is not menstrual symptoms cause these symptoms i have are very exaggerated. Please help me, i don't know what to do. Could i still be pregnant if the blood test showed up negative? Is it too early? Can they make that mistake?

Answer
Hi Adriana,

Your symptoms certainly sound like a pregnancy related issue. I definately agree.

Blood tests, are almost always conclusive. They are precise, even when diagnosing extremely early pregnancy. But like everything else, they are not full proof. I have talked to some ladies whom were pregnant, and indeed got a negative blood test. But its very, very rare that a blood test is inaccurate.

What I would do, if I were you, is do another home pregnancy test. This time do it in the morning. Your morning urine is much more concentrate. So if you are early in the pregnancy, the HCG hormone would be more prominate in the morning.

Now, if that test comes back negative, You certainly still need to see your doctor, to investigate what is going on with your cycle. Again, I would insists on another blood test.

Now, if that test comes back negative again, you can pretty much guarentee that you are not pregnant. However further investigations are needed to find out why you are not having a period, and why you are feeling the symptoms you are.

If you are not pregnant, then you are definately suffering from a hormonal imbalance. Hormonal imbalance can be caused by several reasons. Reasons such as Worry, stress, physical illness or trama ( Cold or flu), excessive weight gain or weight loss, and excessive excersise.

Even when suffering a hormonal imbalance, hormones will mimic pregnancy symptoms to a tee, and it often leaves women very confused.

In more severe cases, Uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts can also cause a hormonal upset, and delay periods.

Now you mentioned that you had a leep procedure. I hardly doubt this would cause any of the symptoms you are experiencing. Leep procedure is done to remove abnormal, or pre-cancerous cells on the cervix. After the procedure is done, most ladies are required to have a regular pap every 3-6 months, and if all is fine, then back to once a year. So aslong as you have been having your routine checkups, I think everything would be okay in that department.

Again, if you are not pregnant, then your doctor will have to do blood work to look at your hormone balances, and also a sonogram to make sure tubes, ovaries, and uterus is fine and to rule out cysts, or fibroids.

And last, this does happen to women quite frequently. Just know that in all scenarios, treatment is available, and very rarely does it resolve in anything terribly serious.

I hope this is of some help, and thanks for writing :)
