Postpartum Recovery: Driving & Activity Guidelines After Delivery

Question
I was wondering why women are asked not to drive for two weeks after delivery?

Answer
Usually, I ask my patients to refain from driving, lifting, or climbing stairs for one week after delivery, and to refrain from any vaginal activity for 6 weeks after delivery. If there is an episiotomy or some inflammation in the area of the vagina, I want to avoid any stretching for, at least a week, to allow it to return to its normal condition. Driving will cause constant tension on this area as you switch from the gas to the break.
