Round Ligament Pain During Pregnancy: Causes, Relief & When to Worry

Question
I am currently 23 weeks and I have been having round ligment pains for about 24 hours straight! I talked to my doctor and she made it seem like it no biggy. Should I seriously take precautions at all? I am 16 years old and this is all new to me.

Answer
Hi Melissa :)

I had terrible round ligament pains with both my pregnancies. So I can sympathize with you completely!

As much as it can hurt, its not really a serious concern. The pain is caused from the ligaments and tendons surrounding your uterus. As they stretch and pull, you definately will feel it.

All I will suggest to you, is to take it really easy, when getting out of chairs, out of bed, or any activity where you have to push yourself out of any positiion. This is generally, when you will feel the pain the most. I found when getting out of these positions, or changing positions, rolling on my side and really taking my time to get up, or down really helped. There is nothing worse, then moving to quickly, and pulling yourself, and lay almost screaming for 2 minutes after. I have done it many times.

Just know, this is common..But take care of yourself ..Because as your tummy grows bigger, then pain will not subside. But you are just fine. What you are experiencing, is one of those not so joyous moments in pregnancy :)

Hope this has answered your question, and thanks for writing. And if you have any more concerns in the future, please dont hesitate to write back :)

All the Best to you, and remember ..Move Slowly!!!
