Metronidazole and Conception: Safe Timing for Antibiotics?

Question
Hi there

I have been prescribed 5 days metronidazole for mild bacterial vaginosis. I am trying to concieve. I am now 2 days post ovulation. If luck is on my side I may be pregnant...who knows!! So, should i take the antibiotics now and get them finished hopefully before implantation/blood supply maybe occurs or should i wait to see if my period arrives then take them?

I had a miscarriage back in june, and dont want it to happen because of something like this!!

Many thanks

Answer
Hi Claire,

Metronidazole is unknown to cause any harm to unborn babies. It is a class B drug which means that no studies have been done on pregnant women but no evidence of fetal risk appears to be present. Tylenol is a class B drug also. There is no right or wrong answer to this question as there is pros and cons with what ever you choose. If you take them now, there MIGHT be a risk, but if you wait and you do turn out to be pregnant and then take them, you are still at that same risk. Good luck!
