Pregnancy Concerns: Identifying Potential Paternity - Medical Advice

Question
Dear Kristy,

My periods usually vary each month from day 23 to 27, lasting appr. 5 to 6 days. My last period was very strang, because it came on June 14, which was the 28 day and it lasted about 3 days. I know i had intercourse a couple of times during June 20th thru the 22nd and June 27th and 28th with my current boyfriend.  The thing is I also slept with and x boyfriend the night of June 24th and early morning on the 25th.  I am now 28 weeks pregnant today. My due date is scheduled for March 13, 2007. I asked my doctor when did I conceive and she stated around June 20th. The doctor's dates does not match with my LMP. Is it possible that i could have ovulated that soon after my period?

What is a yolk sac? On my first ultrasound on Aug 29th,
(12 weeks) the doctor stated that the yolk sac was gone and that usually mean that you are out of the first trimester.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!

Answer
Hi Octavia :)

Well I did some calculations of my own, and ofcourse based on a 28 day cycle. But it will give you a very good general idea of when you actually became pregnant. Remember, this is estimated, and take in consideration, given that your period is at times a 23-27 cycle, you can subtract the date I give you by 4. Regardless, this will give you a definate idea.

If your last period was June 14th, You would have concieved somewhere in the area between June 26th and June 28th. Minus a couple of days, in the event of an early cycle, it would be between the 22nd and 26th.

It is possible for some to become pregnant shortly after their period, however its not terribly common. Gernerally, in the majority of cases, ovulation can happen anytime between day 10 and 20 of your cycle. On rare instances, a lady may ovulated say on day 4 or 5, but its not common at all.

Now, oddly enough the due date I got for you, is March 21st of next year. So, my date is has an 8 day difference then your doctors.

There easily, could be discreprency due to the slight imbalance that your cycle has time to time.  You very well, could have ovulated earlier then the norm, but again, I stress to you, its not common.

Trying to determine who the father is of this baby is going to be hard to determine. Sperm can live for 3-4 days in the female body. So its possible, that while you were with your ex, your current boyfriends sperm was still active, looking to fertilize your egg. Trying to determine who is the father, is virtually impossible right now, given your circumstances. The only way to know, is to have a DNA test. Your dates, when you were active, are simply to close to even estimate.

Shortly after the first appearance of the gestational sac, the yolk sac can be seen.  It is a thin-walled spherical object near one border of the gestational sac.  It is almost always seen between 4 and 5 weeks gestation.

When the doctor stated the yolk sac was gone, he was telling you that fetal formation has started. Visible sight of limbs, head, and legs were apparent.

I hope this has answered your questions, allthough I am sorry I was not conclusive about the paternity of your baby. As I said earlier, the dates are very close, to close to determine.

Happy Holidays to you :)
