Delayed Period & Low LMP: Understanding Potential Causes & Next Steps

Question
My LMP was 11.13.06 and I have 35 day cycles.  I've taken many home pregnancy tests at the end of Dec (when I noticed that my period had not yet come) all of which came back neg.  I had a blood test earlier this month that came back with a 5.  My friends told me that that means a neg.  I've yet to get my period still and don't know what to do.  I have moved to a new area several mo ago, so I don't have a dr yet.  Please help.  Thanks!

Answer
Dear Adrianna,

Yes, a beta hCG test at 5 or less is considered negative. You may have just skipped a period for one reason or another. Many things can cause this - stress, excessive weight loss/gain, excessive or strenuous exercise, depression, thyroid disorders, and most commonly hormonal imbalances.

The general recommendation is that if you miss 3 consecutive periods and have negative pregnancy tests you should see a doctor to determine a cause.

It sounds like you are making friends in your new area. Good recommendations from people you trust are always a good way to find a new doctor. Also, make a list of your expectations (insurance requirements, GP vs. specialist, etc,..). Another great resource for you might be the Administrators in Medicine (AIM) site. This site has a search engine called DocFinder and it allows you to find doctors in your area and contains the licensing background and any disciplinary information on them. This can be VERY useful. I believe the site is www.docboard.org.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your questions. I wish you well!
