Spotting in Early Pregnancy: Understanding Potential Causes & Concerns

Question
I have had one "normal" pregnancy, and one blighted ovum that ended in miscarriage in October.

I am pregnant again and I am 8 weeks and 2 days. I have been spotting brown, having normal white discharge and having strings of brown muscus for 2 weeks. My cervix was still closed at week 7. My quanatative blood tests at week 7 said that it was a viable pregnancy.

I have read on other posts that it could be something with the placenta. Could that be my case? I am unsure if there is a placenta at 6-8 weeks.

I also read something about the baby pushing out the old lining that was in my uterus.

I am a little frustrated with the doctor's office. Because by the next time I see the doctor's nurse practitioner it will be 3 weeks of spotting.

I had sex during this with a condom and after sex there was more brown spotting.

Can you tell me what is going on and if sex is off limits?

Thank you for your help and time.

Answer
Hi Amiee :)

Keep in mind, that sparadic spotting during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy can be normal. However, if you experience moderate, to severe cramping, with heavy bleeding and clotting, then this certainly is an indicator that a miscarriage is happening, or going to happen.

The fact that you are spotting brown, indicates that the blood is old blood. This definately, could be a little of the endometrium(uterine lining) shedding itself. This can be caused from the implantation process, however at 8 weeks gestation, I would be more inclined to say that its less likely, however not impossible.

As for the placenta, its definately forming, at this stage. Sometimes, a blood vessle can errupt within the placenta, causing a blood clot. This is called a subchronic hematoma. This can be a potential serious issue, however when diagnosed it is closely monitored, to intercept any futuer unforseen problems. Many women whom have had hematoma's, have continued to have healthy, normal pregnacies, with healthy babies.

I would definately contact your doctor immediatly and let them aware that you have been spotting over the duration of a couple of weeks. Even though, this possible could be of no concern at all, it still needs to be addressed, and evaluted because any type of constant bleeding can certainly be an indicator that there could be an issue.

Chances are, once you notify your doctor that you are experiencing this spotting, he will do the appropriate testing immediately to rule out concern. Tests such as blood testing to evaluate your HCG and Progesterone levels, as well as a songram, to evaluate the pregnancy.

As for sex, I would advise against it until you get a conclusive diagnoses as to whether this spotting is happening due to a more serious issue. Better safe, then sorry ..right?

In the mean time ..no heavy lifting, no standing for long periods of time, eat well, drink alot of fluids, and watch your caffiene intake. Keep those feet elevated when you can :) Just precaution, till you find out exactly how your pregnancy is progressing :)

Hope this has answered your question, and thanks for writing! Should you have any further concern, please dont hesitate to write back :)
