Irregular Periods & Absence of Menstruation: Causes & Concerns
QuestionI have a history of an irregulated cycles, and went on to birth control to help regulate it. I was on Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Lo. I stopped taking birth control in January of '06. I did have a regulated cycle after that, until May of '06, and I have not had my cycle since then. I am not pregnant, so I am not sure what is wrong. My husband and I would like to start a family soon and I am worried that the lack of the cycle is hurting our chances. Please let me know what I can do, I really don't want to go back on the birth control. Please help
AnswerDear Aarron,
If you have not had a period since May '06, you really need to see a doctor to determine a cause for this. If you are not ovulating, then you are not going to conceive, no matter how hard you try. The doctor can help determine whether you are ovulating or whether the lack of periods is due to another cause. Just let him/her know that you are trying to conceive and do not want to regulate your cycle with birth control pills.
Be prepared that you may end up having to see a fertility specialist at some point. It may be that your OB will try some progesterone to get you started and help you along first. And that may be all it takes! But be prepared for a referral. Some OBs will do that and some will refer you on.
I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. Be well and I'll have a good thought for you.
