Irregular Periods & Factor V Leiden: Risks & Alternatives

Question
18, no children, 12 days ago

I have been getting my period every 10-14 days, so i went to an obgyn they put me on a birth control pill to regulate my period, however i have factor V Leiden a blood clotting disease is this the right thing for me to be on because i thought birth control pills could cause an increased risk of blood clots.  I am a college athlete and could get injured  is this large risk of blood clots going to be a problem.  is there something else i could do instead of the pill.

Answer
The treatment for irregular periods is birth control pills. Nowadays, the low dose birth control pills do not cause blod clots in the legs. Factor V Leiden can cause miscarriage, but is it is not contraindicated for birth control use in patients with Factor V Leiden. Don't worry.
