Birth Control & Period Changes: What to Expect

Question
I just started taking birth control pills exactly two months ago and I am about to start my third month. Before I started taking it, my periods were very heavy and irregular, and now I'm concerned that I might not be getting my period at all. I have been getting a light brown discharge for a few days during the week that I should be getting my period, but I don't think it's my period because there doesn't seem to be any traces of menstrual blood. My doctor said that I should keep on getting my period and it shouldn't stop once I started the pill, and now I'm very concerned!

Answer
Brianna,

You could be having an abnormal cycle from the hormones in the birth control pills. Or is it possible that you could be pregnant? I'm not sure, as you didn't mention being sexually active.

Have you talked to your doctor about this yet? Also, if it's possible that you might be pregnant, you can contact a pregnancy resource center to get a free test there. Go to http://www.optionline.org or call 1-800-395-HELP.

If you're not pregnant, then of course you should talk with your doctor about this situation.
I really don't recommend birth control pills as a birth control method as there are hormones that can cause risks and side effects to your health. Can you consider another non-hormonal method? Please email me at CHERYL51@aol.com and put ALLEXPERTS in the subject line of your email.

Hope to hear from you soon.
