Missed Periods & Negative Pregnancy Tests: Possible Causes & What to Do

Question
I have missed 2 periods, February and March.  I have taken 4 pregnancy tests and they still show negative.  I am 38, still interested in sex, and do not understand what the problem is.  My breasts are very sore, I have gained weight within the past month, and I am extremely tired.  Please help

Answer
Dear Michele,

First, I would want to make sure you have taken the tests in the morning when your urine is most concentrated.

Aside from that, if a pregnancy does not exist, it sounds like your symptoms indicate you may have a bit of a hormonal imbalance.

However, many things can cause the absence of periods. Stress, depression, change in diet, weight loss or gain, excessive or strenuous exercise, chronic illness, certain medications or drug use, thyroid or pituitary dysfunction, or a hormonal imbalance can all cause this.

My suggestion would be that you see your doctor for an exam and evaluation. They will likely do a blood pregnancy test to confirm there is no pregnancy first and then probably check your hormone levels and possibly a thyroid level to make sure all are within normal limits. The complete evaluation will help determine a cause for the absence of your periods.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
