QuestionI know yoiu prolly get these questions all the time. (sorry)
I am a 22 yr old woman who already has a 2yr old son (healthy pregnancy)I have no stress, im not overwieght, i haven't worked out too much, My husband and I are tryting to concieve our 2nd. (we have been trying for about 4 months) my periods are regular about 29-31 days apart. My last period was october 29th, on the 16th i has some spotting only when i wipped. I feel pregnant, even more so than with my son, i feel i really know my body and this is different. Its December 11th (last pregnancy test was taken in the morning of 12-8-07..came out negative) I'm at my wits end because i know something is different. I have my annual gyn exam this friday and a blood test. How likely is it that i am indeed pregnant? And if i am, why isn't it showing up on hpt? also what are the chances they will humor me and listen for a heart beat or give me an ultrasound? Online i put in my last normal period and it says on saturday I will be 7 weeks pregnant (if i were pregnant) Im so lost and confused. please help
AnswerDear Sarena,
If you have your annual GYN exam already scheduled for tomorrow, that is perfect. Just explain the circumstances to them and request a quantitative blood pregnancy test (serum beta hCG). That test will give an actual amount of hCG in your bloodstream rather than just a positive/negative result. Any amount of 25 mIU/ml or more would be considered positive for pregnancy. Some women just have a hard time coming up with a positive from urine tests early on - I cannot explain why. By 7 weeks, hCG should definitely be high enough for a HPT to detect and give you a positive. But some women have said that they can't seem to to get a positive clear into the 10th week or beyond. However - I would say that this would be considered an uncommon thing.
Remember - a qualitative blood test is different than a quantitative blood test. The qualitative test is only slightly more accurate than a urine test.
They MAY be more apt to "humor" you or to more extensively test you if you have previously gotten what you thought was a real faint positive on a HPT. ;-)
An ultrasound would be the only way to note heart activity this early on. They will likely run the quantitative test first and, if it comes back higher than 25, they would proceed with an initial ultrasound.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and a Merry Christmas.
