Early Pregnancy Concerns After IUI: A Doctor's Perspective

Question

Adkins Advantage Milk
Hi Dr. Ramirez,
I am currently 4w5d pregnant after my first IUI.  As I am not yet under the care of an OB, I have a question about early pregnancy and I thought you would be better suited to answer than the RN listed under the pregnancy section since you are in the same field as my RE, and I can't contact her at this hour. I drink these "Adkins" drinks every morning for breakfast, as they are similar to Slimfast in that they are a type of meal replacement, but they have 15 grams of protein in them.  I do not drink them for weight loss, I do it because I really like them, and I need the quick, on-the-go source of protein in the morning to keep me going for a few hours.  These shakes are full of vitamins and low in fat, carbs, and somewhat low in calories.  I don't eat meat every day, so I probably need the protein I am getting from them, and they do keep my hunger in check for several hours- not to mention I really, really like 'em!  I want to be as healthy an eater as I can be while I am pregnant, and I try to make sure I eat veggies and other healthy stuff with whatever I choose for lunch and dinner.  Is there any reason you can come up with that I should not be able to continue drinking these shakes for breakfast during pregnancy?

Answer
Hello Polly,

I see absolutely no reason why you can't drink this in pregnancy.
