Post-Abortion Bleeding & Potential Pregnancy: What to Do?

Question
QUESTION: Hello! I had a surgical abortion on may 1, 2010. everything went fine and I didn't bleed at all after. I started bleeding on April 6th (lasted one day) April 19th (lasted 3 days) then on April 25th (last 20 mins, very light) my husband and I thought I could be pregnant again so I took a test on May 4th and it was negative. I waited to start my period on the 19th and it did not come. we tested again, and all three pregnancy test were positive. (line was very light) can I really be pregnant or can it be a false negative??

ANSWER: Hello, Ashlee,

There is something wrong with your dates, the way I read your message. Did you mean to say you had an abortion in May?

That bleeding pattern is obviously abnormal. It will be important to find out why this is happening.

If you have a 28 day cycle (many women don't, but I don't know about you, and after an abortion, all bets are off anyway), and you count April 19 as your period, your period would have been expected on May 17. Some pregnancy tests will detect pregnancy this "early". I think you meant to ask if the three positive tests were a false positive, not a false negative. Is that correct? You should test again. If you are pregnant, the line would be stronger this time. Always, testing again in a few days is a good way to get an answer.

Since you are married, why did you have an abortion? It is perfectly acceptable to have a baby.

If you are pregnant again, please don't have another abortion! Abortion is dangerous and can kill you. It can do serious damage to your body and to your future children. If you aborted your first pregnancy, you have already greatly increased your chances of getting breast cancer. It tends to strike while a woman is still young, and it kills 1/4 of its victims. If you want to know some things you can do to decrease your chances of developing breast cancer after abortion, please let me know. You have also increased your chances of having a child with a serious birth defect in the future, because when they do a surgical abortion, they have to force open the cervix, and this causes many tiny tears that weaken the cervix so it can't hold the weight of a full term baby. Very premature babies are subject to various defects, such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, epilepsy, autism, blindness, and deafness. When you do get pregnant again, you will need to tell your doctor about your abortion so he can safeguard you against very early birth or miscarriage by fastening your cervix shut until time for birth. The more abortions you have, the greater the damage to your cervix and to your body in general. Abortion can also make your sterile, more prone to tubal pregnancies, and more vulnerable to serious complications during birth. Abortion by pill isn't an answer, either. It is also dangerous and there are several ways it can kill you, some of them within hours. We don't even know what birth defects it could cause in the future. Please don't even consider doing more damage to your body.

If you are facing some kind of problem that makes abortion seem attractive, you should seek help from an organization in your area. These organizations provide counseling and many kinds of help, including help with financial and medical issues, clothing, supplies, and furniture for a baby, and help with adoption. It is perfectly reasonable for a married couple to place a child for adoption. You can find an organization near you by going to this web site:

If you simply don't feel you are ready to have a baby, please know that most women feel the same way in early pregnancy, and our hormones tend to aggravate that feeling anyway. Once past the first trimester, these worries tend to fade, and most women are ready to mother their child by the time of birth.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask additional questions. Please take care of yourself and stay safe!

QUESTION: Sorry!

Date of abortion- March 1, 2010
Dates of bleeding- April 6, 19, 25

I had the abortion before I got married. we were seperated and we thought it wouldn't work out, so I got the abortion. And yes, the tests were positive and I was wondering if they can be a false positive? I also took a test at Stillwater Life Services. (free pregnancy test. abortion, adopton, and prenatal care center.) that test was also positive but the line was very light. Having a abortion really opened my eyes. That's something that I will NEVER do again, because it was very hard for me.

Answer
Hello, Ashlee,

Thank you for the additional information.

My guess would be that the tests are not false positives. This is because you had a negative test in between, and the abortion was quite awhile ago. The only way to be certain is wait and see, I suspect. But it doesn't take long to know for sure.

Does Stillwater Life Services offer abortions?

I am sorry that you did something that you now regret, and I just want you to know that I am here for you if you need to talk about it. I also gave you the link to find a local organization, and they offer post-abortion services, so you might want to check them out. I hope and pray that you will come to terms with this and experience peace. Feel free to keep in touch. I would welcome knowing how you are doing.
