Spotting After Period on Birth Control: Causes & What to Do

Hi,

I have been taking birth control for about 3 months. I just started spotting yesterday. It's a pinkish color. I already had my period on May 1st I started spotting May 20th. Do you have any idea what this could be? It has never happened to me before. Could it be a possible pregnancy? Even though I'm on birthcontrol. I haven't missed any days. Please let me know if you can.

Dear Hilary,

Breakthrough bleeding/spotting is not unusual in the first few months on BCPs. If you continue to have light bleeding between periods for several cycles, call your doctor's office and let them know. It may be a simple adjustment in the dosage of hormones in the pills that is needed to minimize this for you.
