Unexpected Period After Menopause: What Does It Mean?

Question
I stopped menstruating after a year of 3 periods, a hiatus, 3 periods, a hiatus. I am now 50 1/2 years old.  My last menstrual period was 6/06/05.  Then, on October 5th, 2006, 16 months later, I got a period out of the blue.  I had thought that I felt an ovulation pain roughly 2 weeks prior and I had loads and loads of energy, the way I used to when I was menstruating regularly. My questions are:  am I still in menopause?  (I thought menopause was defined as 12 months after your last period.)  Is the clock starting over again? And also, should I start worrying about birth control  !   I don't want to deal with a pregnancy now.  Thanks for your help!

Answer
It's not that strange to get a period out of the blue after that much time. If there's any pain associated with it, I'd go have your doctor check youout. I believe you are still considered in menopause, but am not sure about getting pregnant. Better to be safe than sorry on that one and have the doctor determine if you are ovulating or not.
