QuestionWell I had gotten pregnant in March after 6 long months of ttc. I found out around 8dpo that I was indeed pregnant. I went for my regular checkup at 5 weeks, a u/s was performed, sac was visible, but no fetus. 2 weeks later(7weeks pregnant) I experienced light spotting when I wiped. When I got home from work, I noticed it getting a little more heavy, but still only when I wiped. Went to the ER, and levels were only 1154. Being 7 weeks I was told they should have been higher. Only gest. sac & yolk were visible on u/s. Followed up with my normal OB the following day. He told me to empty my bladder, and when I went to the bathroom, it was even more heavier. He still performed the u/s, but nothing was visible but an empty sac. I was devastated and decided to go ahead and get the D&C done. I spotted for about 2-3 days after the procedure and that was it. I went for my follow up 2 weeks later and the doc said the m/c was caused by a chromosomal abnormality, and that its the most common cause for m/c. They said that I could start ttc as early as after 1 cycle. So now almost 4 weeks later, no sign of af. Took 2 ept's both a week apart to make sure my levels were back down. They came up negative. My last was a week ago, so why hasnt my cycle started yet? Is it possible for me to be pregnant even though I havent gotten my first cycle? We started back having intercourse around the 14th of may. When should I address my Dr about my cycle not starting. I heard theres medications that could jump start it. Can u please shed some light on what caused the chromosomal abnormality? Could there be ferility problems with me or my husband? And what is taking my period so long to start? Im truly thanking u in advance for any info you may provide.
AnswerDear Lena,
Well, you didn't say when the D&C was done, but I will assume, since you said you conceived in March and you were 7 weeks along, that it was probably around the beginning of May. The first period after a miscarriage/D&C is rarely a "normal" period. It can be heavier than normal with a lot of cramping or lighter than normal with no cramping. Typically, your first period should occur within 4-6 weeks.
You could potentially conceive before you actually see another period because your ovaries can produce and release an egg as early as 2 weeks after the miscarriage.
As far as the reason or cause for the miscarriage, the most common cause of miscarriage IS chromosomal abnormality - meaning that something is not correct with the baby's chromosomes. Most chromosomal abnormalities are the cause of a faulty egg or sperm cell or are due to a problem at the time that the fertilized egg went through the division process. Since the cause of most miscarriages is due to chromosomal abnormalities, there is not much that can be done to prevent them. It is just something that occurs as the cells divide and develop.
There is medication that can "jump start" your period if your doctor would determine it's necessary. If your period does not start by the 8th week after the D&C, I would suggest that you contact your doctor.
I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
