Irregular Periods & Possible Pregnancy Concerns: Seeking Medical Advice

Question
I need your help. I went to planned parenthood and took a blood test that came out negative. Also I have taken 2 home pregnancy tests that came out negative which I think I did incorrectly because when I took those home pregnancy test, I did not have to urinate so I drank a lot of fluids to try and make me use the bathroom. I have not had my full period since April 14,2007 but I have had light watery periods that last only for a day. I have been experiencing symptoms I have never in my life like swollen breast, frequent urination, appetite changes, and etc. I was just wondering can I be pregnant?

Answer
Dear Brittaney,

If you have had a blood pregnancy test at Planned Parenthood and have done two more urine tests at home and all have been negative, I would suspect that you are not pregnant.

The symptoms you describe are hormonal in nature and could simply be related to fluctuations of hormones. There are many various causes for amenorrhea (absence of periods) - pregnancy being just one. Others can be:
-Hormonal abnormalities, which cause fluctuating levels of the hormones needed to support menstruation
-Emotional or physical stress / Depression
-Rapid weight loss or gain
-Change in diet
-Low body weight
-Obesity
-Frequent or strenuous exercise
-Cysts or tumors in the ovaries
-Thyroid or Pituitary dysfunction
-Certain medications or drug use
-Menopause OR Premature ovarian failure (menopause before age 40)
-Occasionally stopping birth control pills

The general recommendation is that if you miss three consecutive periods and pregnancy is not the reason, you should see your doctor so that a cause can be determined.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
