QuestionI had the Mirena for only 6 months when it came out on its own on June 25th. On the 28th which is the day I was marked to have my period I had huge blood clots come out, but no breast tenderness or cramping like I usually have. I only had my period for 3 days. Now I'm having pre-period symptoms. Do you think that was my period? I NEVER get my period on time and always have pre-period symptoms. I want to concieve and am wondering if I should go by that as my ovulation schedule, which would be the 10th-14th. Thank you.
AnswerDear Amanda,
Since the Mirena IUD contains a hormone (Levonorgestrel) which helps to decrease the volume of a woman's period, it really is not surprising that this first period would be a bit heavier without that hormone. The cervix is softer during the time when a woman is about to and is menstruating. So, that may be why the device came out on its own right before the period began. You may want to get checked to make sure that everything is ok, however. It isn't an extremely common occurrence that IUDs simply slip out.
Because the timing of the bleeding was when you should have been getting a period anyway, I would count it as a period. The PMS symptoms you are experiencing now may simply be hormonal due to your body trying to regulate things on its own again without the influence of the hormone in the Mirena.
If you are trying to conceive and want to make sure, just try having sex every other day from cycle days 10-20. It sounds like this would be 7/8-18.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
