Low Progesterone in Early Pregnancy: Understanding Levels & Next Steps
Question
Me
Hi Dr. Kandeel. My name is hana and I am now 7 wks and 4 days. This is my first pregnancy and I am very excited! The problem is that i saw my Dr. on Thursday and had my first ultrasound. He said everything looked good and that the heartbeat is fast and there is already a yolk or embryo forming. Well the next day his office had called me at work and said that they are calling in some med for me to take asap. Reason is b/c they said my progesterone level was at 14.5. Is this really low and am I going to have a miscarriage? Should have i taken the vaginal med instead of the pill? Please relieve my mind. They say I wont be able to talk to the Dr. until my next appt which is in 2 wks. I would appreciate any information you could give me thank you.
AnswerDear Hana
I clearly understand your situation and your fears. I do not measure progesterone level routinely at 7 weeks pregnancy unless there is an indication. Unless you are having bleeding per vagina, abdominal cramping or clinical suspicion based on the ultrasound findings, I would not go any further with investigations or prescribing medications.
A level of 14.5 at 7 weeks gestation may be considered as low by some obstetricians. However, this does not invitably going to a miscarriage or unhealthy baby. I belive that your doctor prescribed progesterone suppository just to be in the safe side.
I urge you not to worry and wish you well and safe pregnancy.
