QuestionI've recently started taking the combined pill and the first month went off without a hitch, week break was fine, then in the week after that I missed one pill and took the next day's late. I've had my period since the day after that - which is now 11 days ago. I've also been on antibiotics for the last 4 or so weeks, due to a sinus infection.
Do you think my lengthly period is my antiobotics and pill clashing? My 'break' week is in 3 days time - do I need to have the break so my body can kind of reset itself? Or can I start taking the new pack? I don't want to continuously bleed!
Thanks.
AnswerDear Nicole,
Women can have irregular bleeding in the first few months after starting the BCP anyway. The fact that you had a gap in taking the pills of a day and a half or a bit more is likely what spawned the bleeding. The antibiotic probably has little to do with the bleeding.
I would recommend that you take the week off of the pills as you normally would. Your bleeding may end up dissipating during this time, but you still should take them as scheduled.
When first starting the BCP, it is often difficult for women to get into the habit of taking that pill every day. Try to associate taking your pill with something you do at about the same time every day - like brushing your teeth in the morning, eating a meal, or going to bed. Keep the pill near the place where you perform the selected activity. Establishing a routine will make it easier for you to remember. The pills work best if you take one at about the same time every day. Check your pack of pills each morning to make sure you took your pill the day before.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
